On the CLA....Can't you find a sensor from the original manufacturer whoever that is ie Bosch? Surely every single one of those can't be out of stock?? As an ex tech / mechanic myself I understand the frustration with parts on back order etc. On a separate note, I'm contemplating getting a W221 S500. Is the M273 a good engine? I know about the balance shaft drive cog that wears, but is there anything else?

OMG, thanks for your video. There is no way i'd buy a Benz given poor reliability and parts availability. I've recently had high end Japanese performance cars (including a Mazda Rx8) that they are no where problematic. I had a C280 for short term and I'm so happy i didn't get stuck with it. Guess M-Benz dramas means you have a good business. I admire M-Benz design but not their durability.

What you guys charge for a passenger seat sensors pad supply and fit ??

I can understand people trying to save money. I can even understand customers booking a vehicle in for diagnosis and inspection with the intent of having the repairs done elsewhere for whatever reason (usually money). What I can't understand or respect is customers expecting others to work for nothing. You have a business with fixed costs, staff, running costs and loads of other components. I'm not a diplomat and would probably ask these jokers if they work for nothing. I certainly wouldn't.

An interesting video, thanks for sharing your expertise. I agree that regular maintenance as ever is the key, and that includes preventative maintenance of the known faults you highlight. But if you do your homework and seek out a good one, they are bargain luxury GT motoring. I bought my 2003 SL500 3 1/2yrs ago for £9500. Full service history with receipts etc with glass panoramic roof and the specs that I wanted with 78,000mls on the clock. I put aside £2000 as a repair fund and top that up with £100 per month and I am still well ahead with money still in the bank. Within my spending though has been preventative spend. Although it had been serviced when I bought it, I had the gearbox fluid changed (it had been done previously at 38,000 although it is not on the service schedule) and I also had the ABC fluid changed with a new updated filter. Whilst there was no evidence of leakage around the boot/rear window seal I’ve had that replaced along with the updated gear selector locking pawl. I have also had the crankshaft TDC sensor replaced as they are another known fault. The only item to have failed in the last 3.5yrs is the brake sensor module (and they are generally expected to last around the 80-100k miles) which cost £1100. As others have said, with such a low purchase price, (which is less than you would lose in depreciation on many cars in 1 year of ownership), so long as you budget for repairs and have money set aside, then you are getting a luxury GT car, which at 20+yrs old still turns heads wherever I go, for less than the price of a new hatchback shipping trolley! What’s not to like 😊

Whilst I’ve not had a Merc for the best part of 10 years - last one was an E55AMG - I still enjoy keeping up with your channel and this format is very interesting. Keep it up!

The format you're trying out works really well, to my mind. If you have a particularly problematic car that might well merit a full report, but a week in the workshop keeps the interest in the channel. Keep 'em coming, whatever!

Very sad that some customers are too cheap to let you do the work that you identified as being required. As far as I'm concerned, paying what you charge for the repair is part and parcel of getting the correct diagnosis, plus I'd rather have someone meticulous like you perform the repair than a garage that competes on price.

A really interesting video, thank you. This style video would complement the more in depth ones very well. A question if i may? Do you absolutely insist on using Mercedes parts even where there is a huge delay? Could you not just source the OEM part? Jeep wanted £900 for a Mopar re-manufactured alternator for my OM642. A brand new Valeo, the OEM, was £350!

I enjoyed this video and would like to see more like it but I think you have convinced me NOT to buy a Mercedes with all these faults!

Hey Sam, while we're talking about CLKs and auto gearboxs, I've a 2001 CLK with the 5 speed auto. I tend to change down manually when slowing down or coming to a stop. I've a friend who's adamant that doing this causes damage to older, torque converter gearboxes. I've called BS. Any thoughts??

I have had an SL windscreen on back order since August 2023. I was promised it would be here by October 2023. Then they changed that to Jan 2024. Still waiting.

The deliberate destruction of parts availability. Just one of the many ways to force people out of cars.

So sad with most manufacturers today that serviceable items are on back order. Back in my day stock control manager would be sacked. Very basic for manufacturers to check delivery date against stock movement and make sure stock requirement covers the time for delivery of replacement stock. Looks to me that customer care is not considered by so many. I wish I lived closed to your company as you offer a good caring service with top knowledge. All the best.

Are there no British companies that can repair those gearboxes? I watched Wheeler Dealers and Mike always found men in sheds who seemed to be able to fix anything
